Interior designer wins Guocera Modern Styling contest
Jun 01, 2011
Sharon Thean's creative ingenuity and unconventional use of Guocera tiles left such an indelible impression on the judges that they selected hers as the First Prize Winner of the Guocera Modern Styling Contest.

Thean received a Samsung 63-inch 3D Plasma+ TV that comes with a 3D kit and Blu-ray Home Theatre Digital Surround sound system worth RM23,000 from Edward Liew, chief operating officer of Guocera at a special prize presentation ceremony that was held in conjunction with Guocera's latest Graphite, Linear and Stardust porcelain tile series product launch at the Guocera Gallery recently.

She missed the chance of winning the Grand Prize of a brand-new Nissan X-Trail, but Thean was still rewarded with a 10-inch Toshiba Netbook as the winner of the Guocera Grand Prize Draw.

"The winner's ingenious creativity proves that Guocera tiles can be translated into versatile expressions of modernity, fulfilling the high expectations and demands of our discerning customers and their contemporary lifestyle,” said Liew.

Thean, who is an interior designer by profession said, "Instead of seeing Guocera’s Sonara and Signature tiles as mere finishing materials, I perceive them as a medium to express my creative ideas.

"Using special 'tile puzzling' techniques developed by Dutch artisan M.C. Escher coupled with imagination, I persuaded my home decorator to work on the challenging project and make it a reality."

Thean's home decorator Cheah Chin Chye who won himself a 14-inch Toshiba Notebook as the First Prize Winner in the home decorator category revealed that the tiles puzzle project took him about three weeks to complete. "It involved painstaking work as the irregular, zigzag and curved pieces have to be manually cut and edge-grinded using a power tool. The overall process demanded a lot of skills, patience and perseverance to ensure the final pieces fit exactly like a puzzle," said Cheah.

Meanwhile, Second Prize Winner, R.A. Djuaenah Wiriaatmadja won a German design kitchen set by Ora-Kit worth RM15,000.

The Grand Prize Draw marked the grand finale of Guocera’s Sonara and Signature porcelain tiles launch.

Liew said that it was the first time Guocera has organised a contest to coincide with the launch of Guocera Sonara porcelain tiles.

"It was part of Guocera's strong and concerted effort in building the Guocera brand. We were overwhelmed with the tremendous response from our end-users and trade partners nationwide.

We've also rewarded the monthly winners with a 32-inch Sony LCD television," he said.

Liew added that the latest additions are created to express the personality of modern homeowners and designers, reflecting their discerning taste and dynamic lifestyle.
