Real estate developers required to install RWHS effective September
Jun 15, 2011
All real estate developers are required to install the Rain Water Harvesting System (RWHS) effective this September for each new housing estate or building before obtaining building approval from the local authorities.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said the requirement covers bungalows, semi-detached and all categories of single structures including government, institutions, commercial and industrial buildings.
It is contained in the Uniform Buildings By-laws of 1984 amended by the 64th National Council for Local Government, May last year, he said during a press conference at his office, Monday.
The installation of RWHS would reduce the demand for treated water by 75 percent. Each household consumes an average of 227 litres of water a day and about 25 percent of it is used for watering plants, flushing toilets and washing cars, he said.
In another development, Chor said a Green Solutions For Property Development Conference 2011 with the theme "Greener Cities" would be held July 28 at Sunway Hotel Resort & Spa in Petaling Jaya.
"With seven international and local speakers, this conference would be a platform to impart knowledge and know-how of green building technology and innovation," he said.
"The conference aims to demonstrate that going green is a feasible alternative in today's highly competitive market environment through tried and tested methods which are not only practical but profitable," he said.
About 500 delegates are expected to attend the event organised by Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Human Settlement (EAROPH) and Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (REHDA) with the support of Ministry of Housing and Local Government, and Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water. - Bernama
