Malaysia's Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the government of the United Kingdom have inked a pact aimed at accelerating urban rail development in Malaysia, such as the My Rapid Transit (MRT) project.
The exchange of the signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between SPAD and the UK government represented by the Department for Transport on Rail Cooperation, was witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Speaking to reporters after the event, SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar described the UK as one of the leading countries on urban rail.
"Our intention is to share expertise, experience and information as we implement our urban transport system, such as the MRT.
"They would like to participate in our MRT project, for example, and the best way is for us to collaborate under the MoU," he said.
Other pacts involving Malaysian and British entities cover areas such as oil and gas, training, education and research.
